Bettie has battled diabetes within her family for years. So, when she was diagnosed as having prediabetes, she was alarmed. “I didn’t want to be diabetic,” Bettie said, “A lot of people don’t take a diagnosis of prediabetes seriously, but I was upset.”
Her motto now? “A longer life. Really, it’s about longevity.”
Bettie signed up with the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, and she can now tell you about good nutrition, how to better plan meals and staying active. She says she has learned more from this program than she did from her husband’s doctor visits. “There’s so much you learn in this class,” Bettie said, and she proudly points to weight loss as her proof. Now, she’s working toward lowering her numbers and keeping diabetes at bay.
