Camp is a place where kids discover who they are, build lasting friendships, and try things they never thought possible. At YMCA Camp Carter, overnight camp offers a powerful mix of adventure, independence, and connection all in a safe, supportive, and fun-filled environment.

An overnight camp experience encourages youth to explore new interests, take healthy risks, and grow as confident leaders, teammates, and friends. Whether it’s their first night away from home or their fifth summer at camp, every camper leaves with memories and skills that last a lifetime.

We are intentional in every element of our program to help campers grow into the best version of themselves. While staying true to the YMCA mission of being a camp For All, Camp Carter emphasizes the Y’s Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

These values are woven throughout the camp experience, from activities and cabin life to group discussions and reflections, helping campers explore what these values mean in their own lives. Overnight camp provides structured challenges that promote real growth. These moments may include:

  • Spending time away from home
  • Trying activities like archery, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, animal care, and more unique offerings only held at camp
  • Working through challenges with peers
  • Learning to make decisions and solve problems independently
  • Practicing leadership and teamwork

This is a sample daily schedule that varies by day, week, and camp group. This is meant to be used for reference and a general look into daily camp life.

Need-to-know Information for Families

Everything you need to feel confident and prepared for camp is right here. Below, you’ll find important details about payment schedules, cancellations, and policies so there are no surprises along the way. We’re here to make the process simple and support your family every step of the journey.

For each camp session in which your child is enrolled, applicable program fees will be automatically charged to the card or bank account on file according to the automatic fee payment structure you selected at time of enrollment. Payment structures are designed for our families to comfortably budget the cost of camp.

• Pay Monthly, Due by 2 Weeks Before Session

We understand that plans can change, and we want to support your family as best we can. Please review the following guidelines regarding camp changes and cancellations:

  • Refunds & Credits
    • Before April 1:
      • A full refund will be issued minus the non refundable deposit and registration fee.
    • After April 1:
      • Refunds/credits are only available if a camper from the waiting list can fill your child’s spot.
  • Camp Credit:
    • Credit may be applied to any future week of camp for which your child is already registered.
  • How to Submit Changes or Cancellations
    • All requests must be submitted through the electronic Cancellation Form. This is the only accepted method for canceling or adjusting registrations: https://ymcafortworth.formstack.com/forms/campchangeform
  • Draft & Payment Policies
    • If a cancellation request is not submitted at least two weeks before the start of camp, your scheduled draft payment will still be processed.
    • Registration fees and deposits are non refundable under all circumstances, as stated during registration and on our website.
  • Cancellations Within 7 Days
    • Requests made less than 7 days before the start of camp are not eligible for refunds or camp credit.
    • Your account will be drafted regardless of attendance.

Financial Assistance & Military Camperships

The Y is here for ALL. Financial assistance and income-based scholarships are available to help make summer camp possible for every family. We encourage families to apply early, as assistance is limited.

YMCA Camp Carter proudly offers Military Camperships to families currently serving as active duty, deployed, reserve, and veteran service members. Camperships are available for both Day Camp and Overnight Camp and are awarded using a tiered system based on rank and status. We are honored to serve military families and help ensure camp is accessible to those who serve our country.

Frequently Asked Questions

YMCA Camp Carter provides a safe, inclusive, and enriching camp experience centered on the YMCA’s core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Our programs focus on youth development, outdoor exploration, skill-building, and creating lifelong friendships in a supportive environment.

Camp Carter offers overnight camp from age 7 to 17 typically grouped by grade level or age to ensure age-appropriate activities, supervision, and social development.

We maintain low camper-to-staff ratios that meet American Camp Association standards. Ratios vary by age group to ensure appropriate supervision and safety at all times.

All camp staff complete extensive pre-camp training that includes: CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, Child abuse prevention and mandated reporter training, Behavior management and inclusion strategies, Emergency procedures and risk management, Camp-specific policies and youth development practices. Many staff members are experienced educators, youth workers, or returning seasonal leaders.

All staff members undergo thorough background checks and reference screening in accordance with YMCA policies before working with campers.

We actively promote a friendly, welcoming, and inclusive camp culture. Staff are trained to: Encourage positive peer interactions, Help campers make new friends, Prevent exclusion or bullying, Intervene early when challenges arise. Camp leadership monitors group dynamics throughout the session to make sure every camper feels safe, valued, and included.

Camp Carter uses a positive behavior management system focused on clear expectations, redirection, and positive reinforcement. Staff work with campers to resolve conflicts in a developmentally appropriate way. If a camper’s behavior poses a risk to themselves or others, parents/guardians will be contacted. In rare cases, dismissal from the program may be necessary. No refunds are available for dismissals due to behavior concerns.

Homesickness is a normal part of growing up, especially at overnight camp. Our experienced staff are trained to recognize signs of homesickness and respond with patience, reassurance, and engagement in fun activities. We do not typically encourage a call home as this will exacerbate homesickness. Managing homesickness starts at home. We encourage families to Speak positively about camp, Emphasize confidence and independence, Avoid statements that suggest early pick-up or worry. If homesickness persists, camp leadership will communicate with families to support the camper’s succes

Families are required to complete all health and medical forms prior to camp. This includes: Allergies, Medications, Dietary needs, Physical, emotional, or developmental considerations. Our staff works closely with families to support campers while ensuring the safety of the entire group.

 

Medications must be provided in original packaging and follow YMCA medication administration policies. Camp health staff oversee storage and administration as required.

 

Minor injuries are treated on-site by trained staff. Parents/guardians will be notified of any significant injuries, illnesses, or concerns. In emergencies, families will be contacted immediately and appropriate medical care will be sought.

A typical camp day includes a mix of: Outdoor adventure and nature exploration, Swimming and water activities, Team-building games, Arts, crafts, and creative activities, Structured group challenges, Free-choice or rest periods. Schedules vary slightly by age group and camp type.

Swimming is a core component of Camp Carter programming when weather permits. Swim times may include instructional lessons and/or free swim, depending on the camp program.

 

Because Camp Carter is jam packed with so many activities and opportunities for fun, we do not go on field trips. Occasionally, we may have outside entertainment come in and parents will be notified if this is the case.

We feed our overnight campers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some campers may choose to bring snacks from home or purchase snacks from the camp store. Campers should bring a large, clearly labeled water bottle to camp. Water refill stations are available throughout camp.

Some camp programs may include special meals or treats on designated days. Any food provided by camp will be communicated in advance.

Overnight Camp Drop-Off occurs at the retreat center at 3pm on Sunday of your session. Pick-up occurs on Friday evening at 4pm. Authorized pick-up adults must be listed in your registration account and be prepared to show photo ID.

Late pick-ups may result in additional fees. Repeated late pickups may lead to further action to ensure camper safety and staff coverage.

Registrations occur online in CampMinder. Follow this link. Our Business Office and camp leadership can assist if needed.

An active YMCA youth or household membership is required to receive member pricing and must remain active through the end of the camp session. However, it is not required to participate.

Payment plans are available and can be set up through CampMinder. Balances must be paid in full by designated deadlines.

Refunds and cancellation policies are outlined on our website. In general: Certain deposits and registration fees may be non-refundable, Refunds are not issued for dismissals due to behavioral issues.

Camp cancellations or changes can be requested via this request form. Note, we do not accept change requests sent via email or over the phone.

Yes. YMCA Camp Carter offers financial assistance and military camperships for eligible families. Families must complete the required forms and receive approval before registering.

Families receive communication through email newsletters but photos will be shared the Campanion App connected to CampMinder. Login to your account here.

Please label all personal belongings with your camper’s name. Camp is not responsible for lost or damaged personal items. Plan for active outdoor days, changing weather, and getting messy.

  • 1–2 long‑sleeve shirts (sun protection & cool evenings)
  • 1 sweatshirt or light jacket

Lost and found items are kept on-site during the camp session. Parents/guardians may check the lost and found during pick-up times. Please label all personal belongings, including water bottles, towels, backpacks, and clothing. Unclaimed items are donated after the season concludes.

For safety and the camp community environment, please leave these items at home:

  • Cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, or gaming devices
  • Expensive or sentimental items
  • Weapons of any kind (including pocket knives)
  • Fireworks or lighters
  • Food, candy, gum, or drinks (unless medically required)
  • Vape products, tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances

Items brought against policy may be confiscated and returned at the end of the session.
