Outdoor Education & School Field Trips

Hands-On Learning

Go beyond the classroom with a unique outdoor educational experience. Students engage with curriculum and lessons differently when presented in a direct and hands-on learning environment. Tailor a lesson plan for your goals and students hosted at our 360-acre camp.

Why Outdoor Education?

Learning looks different when students step outside the classroom.

Outdoor Education creates opportunities for students to observe, question, explore, and apply concepts in real-world settings. Through hands-on experiences, students strengthen critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills while building confidence and connections with their peers.

At Camp Carter, students don’t just learn about the world, they experience it.

The World Around Us

This year’s curriculum offers classic camp activities like archery, canoeing, hiking, outdoor life skills, and experiential science classes based on Texas ecosystems and natural history, plus an added focus on how humans connect to the world and how humans connect to each other through teambuilding and group challenges.

At YMCA Camp Carter, mealtime is an important part of the field trip experience. Our food service team specializes in serving meals that combine familiar school cafeteria favorites students know and enjoy with a touch of camp-style excitement. From chicken nuggets and mac and cheese to burgers, quesadillas, wraps, and more, our menus are designed to keep students energized for a full day of outdoor learning and exploration. Best of all, teachers and field trip coordinators can work directly with our team to determine meal selections that best fit their group’s preferences, dietary needs, and scheduling requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

Outdoor Education combines hands-on learning, environmental science, outdoor recreation, and team-building in a natural setting. Students learn by exploring, observing, and participating in activities that bring classroom concepts to life while building confidence, independence, and connections with their peers.

Outdoor Education transforms classroom concepts into hands-on learning experiences. Students engage in activities that support Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) through observation, investigation, problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world application. Our team works with teachers to customize programs that complement grade-level learning objectives and help students make meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world around them.

We offer programs for elementary, middle school, high school, homeschool, private school, and youth organization groups. Activities and learning outcomes are customized to fit the age and developmental level of participants.

Activities may include, but are not limited to – archery, canoeing, nature hikes, ecosystem studies, outdoor living skills, team-building challenges, outdoor cooking, nature journaling, and environmental science investigations. Programs are tailored to the goals of your group and the length of your visit.

Absolutely. We work with schools to customize schedules, activities, food service, learning objectives, and budgets. Our goal is to create an experience that aligns with your educational and developmental goals.

We can accommodate groups ranging from fewer than 10 participants to more than 200 students. To maximize participation and engagement, students are typically divided into smaller activity groups.

Safety is our highest priority. Programs are led by trained staff and supported by established safety procedures, activity-specific protocols, and appropriate supervision. Teachers and chaperones are important partners in the Outdoor Education experience. They help supervise students, support positive behavior, and assist during overnight stays. We typically recommend at least one adult for every 10 students.

Students stay in camp lodging with supervision from teachers and designated chaperones. Specific accommodations, cabin assignments, and facility information will be provided during the planning process. Overnight experiences help students build independence, responsibility, and community while getting them ready for overnight summer camp options!

Yes. We work closely with schools and families to understand dietary restrictions, food allergies, accessibility needs, and other accommodations. Advance communication allows us to provide the best possible experience for every participant.

Outdoor learning continues in most weather conditions, so students should come prepared with weather-appropriate clothing. In cases of severe weather, staff will modify schedules and activities as needed to maintain safety.

Students should wear comfortable outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate layers. Overnight participants will receive a detailed packing list before their trip.

Students gain hands-on learning experiences, stronger relationships with classmates, increased confidence, leadership skills, environmental awareness, and real-world applications of classroom concepts. Many students return with a renewed enthusiasm for learning and the outdoors.

Every Outdoor Education experience is customized based on your group size, program length, activities, and goals. Complete our inquiry form or contact our team to check availability and receive a personalized proposal.
