Strengthen Connections. Build Better Teams.
Every retreat, field trip, staff gathering, leadership summit, and group event is an opportunity to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and develop skills that last long after your group leaves camp.
At YMCA Camp Carter, team building is an intentional, professionally facilitated experience designed to help groups connect, collaborate, and grow together.
Whether you’re bringing a corporate team, school group, church leadership team, nonprofit staff, athletic program, or community organization, our experienced facilitators can incorporate team-building activities into virtually any camp experience. From a single activity session to a fully customized leadership development program, we’ll help create an experience aligned with your group’s goals.

State-of-the-Art Low Ropes Challenge Course
At the heart of our team-building offerings is our eight-element Low Ropes Challenge Course, generously funded by the Buddy Puente Foundation and completed in 2026.
Nestled within one of Camp Carter’s beautifully shaded areas, the course provides a welcoming outdoor environment where teams can challenge themselves, support one another, and discover new ways to work together.
Featured elements include:
- Whale Watch
- Up & Over Wall
- Birthday Log
- Mohawk Walk
- Team Traverse Challenges
- Balance & Initiative Elements
- Cooperative Problem-Solving Stations
- Group Trust Experiences
- And Much More!
Each activity is facilitated by trained staff who help participants connect physical challenges to real-world team dynamics and workplace skills.
The ropes course is often the highlight of a retreat, but it’s only one of the many ways we can help groups grow.

Beyond the Ropes Course
For groups seeking a more traditional workshop environment, Camp Carter also offers classroom-based leadership and professional development sessions. These facilitated experiences combine discussion, reflection, and interactive exercises to help teams explore topics such as:
- Leadership fundamentals
- Communication styles
- Leading through change
- Employee engagement
- Workplace culture
- Personal accountability
- Strengths-based leadership
- Building high-performing teams
Many of these experiences incorporate concepts and learning tools drawn from the YMCA Leadership Competency Model, helping participants develop practical skills they can immediately apply in their organizations and communities.
The Character & Leadership Journey
We believe every young person has the potential to become a leader.
The Camp Carter Character & Leadership Journey provides a clear pathway that guides participants from their earliest camp experiences through advanced leadership opportunities. As youth grow, they build skills in teamwork, resilience, communication, service, problem solving, and servant leadership.
Each stage of the journey is designed around a simple progression:

Character Development Woven into Every Experience
At YMCA Camp Carter, character development is not a separate program. It is intentionally woven into every team-building activity, outdoor adventure, and camp experience. Guided by the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, participants are challenged to grow as individuals while learning how to support and lead others.
Through collaborative challenges, service opportunities, reflection, leadership experiences, and daily interactions with peers and staff, participants develop critical life skills including communication, resilience, problem solving, empathy, and teamwork. Along the way, youth are recognized for demonstrating positive character and leadership behaviors, helping reinforce the habits that lead to success both at camp and beyond.
As participants return year after year, the journey continues through increasing opportunities for service, mentorship, and leadership. Older campers can progress into Leadership-in-Training (LIT) and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) programs, creating a unique pathway from camper to counselor and from participant to community leader. By combining character development, leadership growth, service learning, and purpose-driven experiences, Camp Carter helps young people build confidence, discover their potential, and make a lasting impact on the world around them.
